Whistling noise is due to gear driven cams rather than chain drive.

Its a three cylinder engine. so not unlike a twin vs an inline 4. the three cylinder produces a different noise. The whistling you are hearing is more the engine noise than the exhaust noise. To each his own though. I find that i like the sound of a triple. reminds me of a supercharged car.
