In August 2010, I climbed Mt. Huashan (华山) with my friend Dan. Huashan is one of China's "sacred peaks," making it a very popular tourist destination for Chinese and foreigners alike. Not far from Xi'an, Huashan is a highly developed mountain with hiking paths, food and drink vendors and even hotels reaching the highest points on the four main peaks. Previously a favorite venue for Taoist hermits to come meditate, Huashan is now easily accessible from several hiking paths and even a cable car that runs up to the North peak. As such, it can be quite crowded, which can be a bit distracting from the gorgeous view.

  • The wooden planks lead to a small sitting area on a decent-sized ledge, with a few trees covered in flags. It costs a little bit to walk the planks, and there is only one trail, so when you get to the end you have to go back the same way, stepping around the other hikers.

  • The 长空栈道, Long Sky Plank Road is about 1,500m above the ground and is very imposing, but since you're given a harness to tie into the safety line, it felt like the least dangerous part of the hike.

We were there in early August, so it wasn't a special holiday, but it was a weekend, and my video doesn't quite show just how crowded the mountain gets. I was trying to focus on the beautiful views instead of the mass of people.

These locks were left there by Chinese couples. They bought these locks, locked them, and threw keys down cliffs. By doing so, they hope they will never separate from each other unless the keys can be found (it's impossible). It's like an oath to marriage or partnership.
