This week, the Japan-U.S. Citizens for Okinawa Network and the Network
for Okinawa have paid for a full page ad to run in The Washington
Post. The ad reads: "Would you want 30 military bases in your
backyard?" and asks: "Tell the Obama Administration: We don't need
this base in Okinawa." So why is it exactly that Okinawans are so
upset? Alyona discusses the rising tensions with John Feffer from the
Institute for Policy Studies who works in coordination with the
Japan-U.S. Citizens for Okinawa Network.
i want the okinawans to be happy. but the okinawans also have crappy governors... and right now the governor that they have is a fake bitch and is fucking everything up between americans that do respect the okinawans... because she is making every american come off as assholes because of the fucked up military dudes that screw it up for everybody else... but you also have to remember okinawans dont like there dirty laundry out there but they are quick to put our dirty laundry out there. its sad

okinawa has been fighting for this stuff for a long ass time... they already took a base about 20 years ago maybe a lil more then that... and you know what they do with that base... NOTHING... it's just a big as field... all that protesting, for what? just to complain... and what some of the okinawans dont understand is if they were gonna get used again who the fuck is gonna help them other then the military bases... i've lived on oki for 20 years almost 21 years now... and it's the same shit

While the whole world is up rising and fighting for their freedom, the Okinawans need to do the same and protest for the rights of their own island. Not only did the Japanese exploit the Okinawans before WWII, now the American military is raping the the land and doing so with no disregard of the people. Okinawans need to fight and lead the people to liberation of this military industrialization of its island. Fight like the Taiwanese, like the Egyptians, like the Libyans! Free OKINAWA !

@ryanschipper Its somewhat true, But the Okinawan's dont want the air bases because the aircraft is very disruptive, and there have been massive protests in that respect. But the mainland Japanese that are not friendly with the us would ship over to japan to incite the Okinawan's and cause trouble with the troops.

During my stay in okinawa, the marines acted like fools almost all the time off base, not all of them, but a great deal.
You have to respect that the japanese people are very quiet and to themselves and to see shitfaced american's just sucks.
I lived off base for the entirety of my stay.
So i guess i can say that yeah i would be there protesting as well.

Let's face it, the Japanese forking out that much money for American soldiers is wrong, if they are going to pay for defence it should be on their terms, with their own army. AFAIK the US agreement with Japan after WWII still stands in that the USA will not allow Japan to have it's own standing army, all they have is the "Defence Force". It's about time the US let japan build its forces and got out. It's about time the US got out of a lot of places tbh.

I'm half Okinawan and American. I've lived in Okinawa for 20 years. There's always going to be pros and cons with the military bases in Okinawa. If the military bases were to be relocated out of Okinawa there are fears of major corporations taking the land. Perhaps moving certain air bases away from residentials would be good for safety...AND I QUOTE KEEPING STUPID SOLDIERS FROM DOING STUPID THINGS OFF BASE WOULD HELP!!! Respect is earned and alot of soldiers have earned respect there.

While I hate US Imperialism, I'd also hate to see Japan torn apart by its neighbours over atrocities that happened in WW2 and earlier. It'd be as stupid as Germany's neighbours taking revenge today. Some US bases should stay until Japan signs some sort of Asian Alliance agreement with China, Korea, etc.
