The Burnham Plan Project at YOUmedia gives young people in Chicago the chance to examine their community with the eye of an urban planner intent upon improving the local landscape. Using a suite of new digital technology tools, participating students explore their neighborhoods with the aim of publishing their ideas about how their communities could be improved. In the process, they learn about and have the chance to celebrate the history of urban planning in their city.
The result of a partnership among the Mobile Learning Institute, YOUmedia, the Digital Youth Network, and the MacArthur Foundation, the Burnham Plan Project is a multi-week pilot digital arts program for middle and high school students. Inspired by the centennial of the Burnham Plan that re-envisioned Chicago in the early 20th century, the program encourages young people to consider avenues for positive change and share their views and proposals for solutions via media they create themselves.
