i have sprained my supraspinatus one and a half month ago and i still have pain when I lay down on my sprained shoulder and when i bench it hurts next day... what do you recommend?

I have a tear of the supraspinatus tendon (partial-thickness tear, 30% tear that is 1.5cm). The inflammation has largely subsided and I can begin strengthening exercises. Can I do this one, or will that cause the tear to grow?

thanks mate for the infomation, i appreciate it...

Hi Massageceu. I'm a keen free style swimmer. The MRI says that I have a discrete intrasubstance tear of the supraspinatus. My surgeon says that he can't operate because the outer layers are intact but also that the tear won't heal !!! He says that it only can become worse.
So do you think these excercises are helpfull or have you had cases of intrasubstance tears with full recovery (by strenghtening and eccentric excercises) ? I hope so. Because this impasse is very frustrating. thx Tom

Great online resource.
Metriks' FCE software allows the healthcare professional to objectively quantify and report on a person's functional abilities.

it say "full thickness tear".....sorry
Why don't you lift the weights using the empty cup grip?

The empty cup grip brings the supraspinatus into contact with a ligament in the front and top of the shoulder joint. This causes chafing and inflammation and is a frequent cause of supraspinatus tendon breakdown in the first place! Therefore, turn the "cup" up when strengthening the muscle!

MRI says i have a tear, how long should I rest it before I start the rehab process with stretching and these exercise?
hoping not to go under the knife, I lift a lot of weights and do a lot of martial arts

You need to talk to your Dr. about your MRI results. Is the tear complete? Does it include the infraspinatus? Is surgery required? At some point a strengthening protocol will be vital, but you need to get some guidance from your physician on this! Good luck! Doug
