Die Kunst der Demokratischen Volksrepublik Korea ist außerhalb des eigenen Landes weitgehend unbekannt. Die Ausstellung im MAK gibt erstmals einen umfassenden Einblick in dessen zeitgenössische Kunst, Plakatproduktion und Architektur. Zu sehen ist eine fremde Kultur, die zum einen durch die allumfassende Verehrung des 1994 verstorbenen „Ewigen Präsidenten" Kim Il Sung und des derzeit regierenden Staatsoberhaupts, seines Sohnes, Kim Jong Il, und zum anderen durch die Juche-Ideologie, einer spezifischen Interpretation des Sozialismus, bestimmt ist. Gezeigt werden rund 100 Öl-, Auqarell- und Tuschebilder, eine repräsentative Auswahl an Plakaten und ein Modell des Juche-Turms, des Wahrzeichens von Pyongyang, ergänzt durch Architekturzeichnungen und Fotos. Zum ersten Mal weltweit werden 15 Porträts der Staatsführer Kim Il Sung und Kim Jong Il ausgestellt.

The art of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is largely unknown outside its home country. The exhibition Flowers for Kim Il Sung at the MAK offers a first-ever comprehensive look at this country's contemporary art, poster art and architecture. In the spotlight is a culture that seems foreign to us, determined by the all-encompassing worship of "Eternal President" Kim Il Sung (deceased in 1994) and his currently reigning son Kim Jong Il, Chairman of the National Defence Commission, and characterized by the Chuch'e Idea, a specific interpretation of socialism. Around 100 works of fine art—oil paintings, Chosonhwa paintings and watercolors—and 30 selected posters are presented. Large-format portraits of the president Kim Il Sung and his successor Kim Jong Il, Chairman of the National Defence Commission, are also on display.
