The Scientists are an influential post-punk band from Perth, Australia, led by Kim Salmon, initially known as Exterminators and then Invaders. The band had two primary incarnations: the Perth-based punk band of the late 1970s and the Sydney/London-based swamp rock band of the 1980s. The Scientists were much more influential than their minimal commercial success would indicate, lending their influence to artists such as Mudhoney and New York's downtown indie scene of the early 1990s.

  • @admanphoto It was an era... nothing happened in a vacuum. Don't bother comparing. We had Dorian Grey, Plays With Marionettes, etc. The sad part is that the adventure was cut short by corporations who promote the Lady Gagas, the Beyonces & other obvious crap. There is no nurturing talent in the industry anymore. No corporation is concerned with anything other that instant returns. We've been deprived of real talent for so long that we can only find it by going back - way back - in time.

  • @frenzexperiment Lived it. It was amazing! Forget about holding the whiskey: we just tossed it down our throats & danced ourselves stupid. It was an era and a half!

  • god this band was good. Once bummed a cigarette from Kim Salmon at Livid festival....the tobacco of God.

  • @DriftPirateD I'm not about to enter into a socio-political diatribe about the circumstances that have created this paucity of expectations if you don't know the history of 'pop music'/'pop culture'.

Firstly, I don't listen to commercial radio, only alternative radio which is great for sending me to sleep. Any bands I've found have been via social sites.

Tell you what, you name a few of your great bands (& your favourite songs/tracks) & I'm happy to have a listen.

  • @irynski Not true. There are plenty of amazing bands producing amazing music nowadays. You just aren't looking beyond the radio. It's not the big corporation's fault that Joe Everyman is lazy and wants to be sold things. You aren't deprived of talent, you're depriving yourself of talent. Quit using a scapegoat like that to make up for your own inability to explore and find things beyond what's presented to you. That's more disgusting than all of the Lady GaGas in the fucking world.

  • oh man! does anybody hear that?Mudhoney were for sure influenced by them

  • Lived it, still livin it - I can't hear very well now. Stood next to the PA for two of their gigs in a couple of weeks, the Paddo Green and the Trade Union I think, and after both could not hear traffic noises for a while. Then I had ringing in my ears for a while until it came good. I could hear people talking, the TV, everything except the traffic. Rocknroll!

  • @AcousticLauson too right, even the term 'grunge' came from Perth. Imagine my surprise to hear of a Seattle 'grunge band' called Nirvana. (Still, they were very good.) Kurt Cobain apparently had these guys in his record collection.

  • Great to hear this song again ... hadn't heard it since about the time it came out, when only 3RRR ( in Melbourne ) would play this type of stuff. Wayne

  • Big live faves. Rough and exciting.
