It's been months since an Alco has made it's way to Slateford for the NS exchange. A trackmobile was the only connection to the isolated paper mill customer, just beyond the corroded Bells Bridge. Apparently, years of salt runoff from Interstate 80, which crosses above the bridge, caused corrosion in the crossmembers and the inevitable OOS. This film shows the first trains over the bridge, workers were still doing finishing touches, on Sept. 22,2011. The first Portland Turn to Slateford had about 35 cars. The Delaware-Lackawanna is now connected at to the Portland Secondary for transfers from Norfolk Southern.

  • @johnmventre Delaware Lackawanna & Western. Yes, NS runs up from Allentown. Historically speaking, they turn off the Lehigh line to the Bel -Del (across the LHR bridge to Phillipsburg) cross the Delaware River again at Martins Creek onto the DL&W.

  • Norfolk Southern changes with the DL at Slatford. What railroad was it before NS and Conrail ? Does NS come up from Allentown ?
