@Cantormatis YR almost entirely recorded his own compositions. The exceptions were some Yiddish pieces that were sung by many cantors - and Ashamnu Mikol Am along with Rachel M'vakah - both by David Roitman. But by and large he composed all of the pieces he recorded (close to 200).
@bluechazzan Rosenblatt did not only record his own compositions. Nevertheless, his style is incredibly appealing. His performances are nuances and passionate. His compositions are extremely fine as well. MK and YR are sort of different animals, so to speak; both are marvelous!
@musikgeni To proclaim any cantor to be the greatest of all time would be hard to justify. You may certainly have your preference but can you honestly say Rosenblatt was better than Roitman, Rutman, Karniol, Sirota, Hershman, etc......? (and that's only a few recorded cantors - there were a great many who never were recorded who were just as great) They each had their own strengths and styles and unique contributions to the cantorial art which is unfortunately, mostly dead today.
@musikgeni MK had a more impressive voice in some respects. However YR had fuller low notes, a fantastic falsetto, flexible coloratura (MK's was not as fast and flexible), and tremendous musicality. YR composed all of his own pieces and even had he not been a cantor of renown in his own right, he would still have gone down in history as a great composer. YR's warmth is more evident than MK's as one can hear through his natural sob.
I was 10 years old when I heard Moshe Koussevitzky in concert and he will always be my favorite. However, over time I have grown to appreciate the greatness of Rosenblatt. Even with poor accoustics his fabulous voice resonates.
Son of Tenor, only heard about the great Cantor that turned down La Juive thanks you tube & thank you for posting this wonderful artist.
