Paul Amey performs his anti-Northern Pass song at First Night in Saint Johnsbury, Vt. on December 31, 2011. Amey wrote the song last March when he learned of the project while serving in Kuwait.
LYRICS:
We were raised in the hills, and lived off the land,
And we did for ourselves, no handouts from Sam,
We kept the land open, with the fields a green sea,
The woods without houses, a place to grow trees
The cities down south full of waste and decay,
We raise food and fiber, and they throw it away,
And they want to take land that we'd never sell,
Bring towers and cables over mountains and dells
We'll not let them build it; we'll see that they fail,
We'll fight them and run them straight out on a rail,
No towers or cables, no poisons or sprays,
We don't want you here, so just go away
When the Dutch bought Manhattan for 35 dollars,
They cheated the natives of their homes and their lands,
This is nearly the same as it was way back then,
Just the names and the faces of the people have changed
They bring trinkets to barter for land that our fathers,
Worked lifetimes to clear near a century ago,
And they think because we're few, and we don't have much money,
They can tell us to run, and we have to go
I don't think so...
There once was a plan to flood our great valley,
We fought them back then, this is no different really,
Take your towers and wires and just leave us alone,
We don't want you here, this is our home
