The unified rules make zero sense.

We allow elbows on the ground, which really are just good for cutting and mutilating rather than KO'ing and don't require too much skill, yet disallow the strategic use of knees and kicks on the ground.

The Japanese had it right. No elbows, to open up the subs, and grounded knees/kicks, so kick boxers can attack without entering the guard and north/south, side-mount, and sprawl have true offensive significance.
