The giant squid, Architeuthis dux, evaded being photographed alive for the whole of the 20th century. Finally in January 2002 one was caught by chance off Japan and photographed; since then there have been half a dozen giant squid caught alive and photographed.

Here is a slideshow of all known living Architeuthis photographs. If anyone is aware of any other images, please drop me a line.

If anyone enjoyed this, please have a look at my 'Colossal Squid Gallery' for images of the giant squid's bigger cousin. I've also added a short video on belemnites which were extinct cousins of squid and only known from fossils.

For more information on these, and other cephalopods, please visit www.tonmo.com.

  • Jesus, that's huge. Creepily so. These slideshows are very well made and informative, you're doing a great job.

  • Why thank you very much, much appreciated! Architeuthis is an awesome animal and I thought it was worth sharing some of the lesser known images of the beast to anyone interested.

I'd love'd to have added some video footage from the last catch in Japan - maybe one day I'll work out how to do it.

  • 13 meters? Bah, my biology professor told me that they can grow to be maybe 20 meters long and weigh up to 880kg. But those are the really huge ones that live at 200-1000 meters depth, you rarely see one of those.

  • but b4 there was a bigger one when that one died others came that were a bit smaller

  • I thought architeuthis had claws instead of suction cups.

  • I saw the squid at 2:40 on some tv show (:

  • The Squids caught aren't THAT big..and a 13 metre one? I doubt they'll come up to the surface for fun, let alone to attack a ship!

    All Folklore...

  • 4 meters is huge, imagine a 13m one! and ye there is probly more stuff down there we dont know about

  • Oye mi´jo tu video es chafa no tiene sonido, pero contiene buena información espero seas lo suficientemente inteligente para comprender estas lineas y no que seas un cerdo estadounidense carente de cerebro como lo son la mayoría.
