@bgreen915 Inverters use electronics to convert the raw alternator ouput power to the desired sine wave at the correct frequency and voltage, and can vary engine speed as required for the load, while the term generators generally refer to the less expensive units that need to run at exactly 3600 rpm all the time to output the 60Hz required. Generators may not output a waveform as close to a sine wave as inverters.
Note the term inverter is also used for 12V to 120V converters.
