Named a "Local Hero" by the San Francisco Bay Guardian in 2001, Robert Haaland is a former President of the Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club, Co-Chair of SF Pride at Work. He led campaigns to protect renters, fought for police accountability, sparked and managed the write-in campaign for Tom Ammiano for Mayor in 1999, was the first transgender candidate to win public election in San Francisco history, is an elected member of the San Francisco Democratic Central Committee, and has served on that body since 2002. In 2003, he was received an award from the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club for his work in building coalitions. He was also a Community Grand Marshal for the SF LGBT Pride Parade in 2007. A graduate of UC Berkeley and Hastings College of the Law, Robert currently works as the political coordinator for SEIU Local 1021.
