Author Alice Rothchild discusses her book, Broken Promises, Broken Dreams as part of Northeastern University Library's Meet the Author series on October 16, 2008. Using both Palestinian and Jewish first-person narratives, Broken Promises, Broken Dreams wrestles with the complex and thorny history of Israel and Palestine. Rothchild is a Jewish American physician who has collaborated with Physicians for Human Rights-Israel and the Palestinian Medical Relief Society, and who draws on her own experiences to tell a difficult and multifaceted story.
You speak of young Israeli soldiers showing lack of compassion at checkpoints to Palestinian non-combatants but you do not in the same breath point to the hundreds of incidents where a helping hand opened the way for murder, you speak of Arabs living in Palestine being displaced by Jewish settlers coming but do not speak of the hands of peace and cooperation offered by Jews and the massacres of Jewish people for many decades before 1967. Where are the stories of Gazans being treated in Israel?

You speak of 'framing' & presenting both sides, but when presenting the Palestinian side of suffering you neglect to consistently present the cause and effect relationship from the Israeli side. Examples in point; you speak of the suffering caused by the separation barrier but do not address in the same breath that suicide bombers have been stopped by this wall, you speak of ambulances being shot at but neglect to draw attention to their use for smuggling weapons and fighters. We need you 4 us.

Even though many Jews instinctively know that their sacred tradition and own tragic history requires them to speak out against all oppression committed in their midst, not many do so. I applaud Dr. Rothchild for writing this book.
