Margapati "Lion King"—traditional solo female dance for gamelan angklung
Choreographed and composed in 1942 by I Nyoman Kaler of south Bali, Margapati suggests the movements and character of the king of the jungle while hunting. As with other kebyar-style dances of this period, it presents a strong male character study performed by a female dancer. The music relies on a relatively small number of melodies treated to near-continuous variation through subtle shadings of tempo, dynamic and accent, all of which are reflected in the dancer's movement. Dancer: Ni Luh Andarawait
