Elapsed Loop and a Madman
Dance theatre with a sound display

Concept: Einat Ganz and Ben Buchenbacher | Choreography: Einat Ganz |
Generative sound: Ben Buchenbacher | Artists/performers: Igal Furman, Naama schendar, and Ofer Amram | Costumes: Inbal Lieblich
Rehearsal directors: Arkadi Zaides & Osnat Kelner

A love triangle between three imaginary figures is an allegory to a reality, in which there is an object of desire, a will to achieve it and a driving motivation -- ideology. The desire controls the desirer, who is willing to go through hell and fire to achieve his goal, But once he gets his wish, the desire dies - the ideology becomes worthless. The three performers; Two men and a woman, compose the parts of a wireless sound system. As part of their costumes they are wearing 2 loudspeakers and a microphone.

The movement language, together with the use of the sound system, forms clear metaphors, almost clichés, that aim to communicate with the violence existed in the Israeli daily reality. The images refer to westerns, where the main protagonists are represented by their weapons as a sort of a technological extension, carried on the body. In this performance, the western's pistol is exchanged with the sound instruments (the loudspeakers and the microphone) and the performers are expressed through and driven by the system; the voice of one performer comes out of another in a different part of the space and thereby loses the reference to the performer who produced it, or close encounters amongst a microphone and a loudspeaker, creates a feedback sound. These effects design the images, in which the characters are like pieces on board; they become displays of a concept rather then "story-tellers".

Situated at the side of the stage is a sound control station, which controls the sound system during the show. Its presence is an outside controlling power that changes the spectators attitude towards the events on stage. The idea of superficiality and the representation of the performers through equipment, which they cannot fully control, comes to raise questions concerning self expression, the ability of choice, desire, consequences of our deeds, and assuming responsibility.

This work was ordered by the interdisciplinary arena (Hazira Performance Art) in Jerusalem, for 'One on One' project, and was first performed at the Zirat Machol Festival 2010 |
Curator: Guy Biran | Choreographic advisers: Arkadi Zaides and Anat Danieli
