From October 2009 to January 2010, small pararie 5521, recently returned from Poland is visiting the Dean Forest Railway in Gloucstershire with a small visit to the Avon Valley Railway at the end of October. I visited the line on Sunday 25th October to video (although with one round trip) the loco on the line with its autumnal colours.
We first see 5521 at New Mills (rested on a milepost) with it leaving 30 minutes late from Norchard, we then move later in the day after a round trip on the loco to Upper Forge where we see the loco on both its outward journey to Parkend and its return.
Then we move to the village of Whitecroft where we see the loco passing through the lovely village setting to Parkend and it returning to Norchard. On the way back home I decided to get a shot at St Marys Halt in the falling sun, I ended up beating the train there on accident, unfortunaly my camera wouldnt focus so we only see the Norchard bound train leaving with the last service of the day. This video is uploaded in reduced quality

  • I feel sorry for it going to the avon valley railway because it has to be the worst preserved railway in britain trust i have been there

you could call it a steam train grave yard all is on site is three steam locos running and like 15 rusting away in the yard it is disgusting

  • I went to the Avon Valley Railway in August and I thought it wasn't that bad and was a nice line. Considring they don't get too many visitors and don't get much funding and have had the route paved over by Sustrans, 3 steam locos restored is quite good as for each loco, I would say it costs around £100,000 to restore them to running condition, without day to day servicing etc, and they can't exactly hide the others away, Bitton being quite small and a very public area.

  • Absolutely superb video Jamie, that's got to be one of your best to date. The colours in the Forest this time of year are magical...5* Bob

  • Cheers Bob, the forest looks excellent at this time of year, looked great in the early evening light.

  • @bristolpitbull whats it like being a fireman?

  • Superb quality Jamie. Imagine having that smoke go in your bedroom window everyday though. Man it was close to that house!!

  • i do wish they would get rid of the tube and the rest of the thing thta meake her look diffrent soon

  • Spot on video - great locations.

Shame about ratings being disabled 5 STARS!

  • Actually i did volunteer on that railway for about a year until the volunteers turned against me because i wanted to help fix the engines but i was half a year underage to work on them and that made some people jealous etc. So they decided to find a moment where they could kick me off the railway and they won but i still will get revenge from the railway some day.

  • I dont think what you've said is fair. they have 2 fully operational locomotives and about 5 under resteration/overhall. it may look like nothing is happenin but thats because the owning groups are restoring the parts for their loco's befor they do the big bits. ive been told the van that holds the parts for the battle of britain is like a treasure trove because it has so many well restored parts. and if you think its so bad how about you join as a volunteer and help restore the rolling stock.

  • excellent video captures the railway wonderfully with the coloursof the trees.. i was the fireman that day!!!

    cheers keirran
