  • Bio char serves a different purpose from vermiculite - it adds carbon to the soil in a very stable form. More useful in the open garden than in a container. Vermiculite lightens the soil and improves drainage, and alternatives to it are usually perlite or sand. I prefer the feel of working with vermiculite, and that's mostly why I use it!
