Take a small tour of this Midwest maintenance facility, showing borrowed cars from New Jersey Transit, Engine 8 which was wrecked in a rear-end collision in Chicago in 2007, and Engine 822, fresh from its repaint to its 40th Anniversary Phase III colors.

  • whoa, amtrak #8 p42 must have gotten owned. Why are the p40 and p42 getting destroyed and in accidents but I don't see any p32ac-dm getting hurt like this or in any accidents. Are those the comet Ib ( former arrow) that were being towed along the hudson line by lakeshore limited.

  • @malikrthr1 No idea on the story on the Comets, but #8 was wrecked in 2007 when it rear-ended an NS stack train in Chicago.

The P32's get spared mostly because there are fewer grade crossings in their territory.

  • hmmmm u think if they wernt gonna use the f40s anymore they would have converted them already or scraped them............maybe amtrak has something planed for them i mean with all the wrecks they might have to put a couple back in service...there arnt enought Dash-8s for back up service and the f59s r used alot so we might see one someday going again

  • lets get some of those F40PH's working!

  • they still havent fixed 8

  • Wassup? Love from Sunnyside Yards NYC

  • Me want to take and go there and take a friend with I.

  • I just took and saw these shops on the History channel. They took and showed it on a show they took and called Boneyards. You should take and see it.

  • I like the "real" Phase III on the P40, but the Phase III that was with the P40s when they first came was classic!

  • wish they'd get the 822 back in service. those little GE 45Tonners are pretty neat in Phase V colors.

  • Poor 'ole #8 looks so forelorn.

The dualmodes mostly run on the Hudson River route, which is highly protected by the river being on the one side.. Few grade crossings there, and those crossings are protected.

Out here in the wild west we also have more sleepy bad truck drivers who ignore warning signs. Lots more unprotected and poorly protected grade crossings. That's an opinion for what it is worth.
