Vetiver & Hope Sandoval - Angels' Share

Andy Cabic grew up in northern Virginia and spent a few years in Greensboro, North Carolina, playing guitar, writing music and recording as a member of the Raymond Brake. After moving to San Francisco, Cabic joined the rock band Tussle, simultaneously recruiting other local musicians including cellist Alissa Anderson, troubadour Devendra Banhart, along with special guests Colm O'Ciosoig (My Bloody Valentine), Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star) and the then-unknown Joanna Newsom among others to record Vetiver. The album was released in 2004 to high critical praise from around the world:

Like an album of dreamy, gentle songs that George Harrison would have written in some sunny country garden. There's hypnotic finger-picking on guitar, a warm steady drone of cello. The band includes neo-folkie mystic Devendra Banhart, who does minimal singing and songwriting for the most part, but one can hear the aesthetic of Banhart's music here, even if the songs aren't as haunting. The high point is probably "Angel's Share," a lovely song that has Hope Sandoval from the band Mazzy Star singing languid and sweet harmony vocals. There's also a winning and odd swooning eulogy to the Seattle Arboretum. Vetiver is a type of Indian grass, and this is music designed for lazing about in a summer lawn. -- John Adamian/Hartford Advocate

  • hope sandoval yeahhh!! she is amazing, her artistic values are irreplaceable. i love you

  • I'm sorry but I disagree, her voice sounds like it is coming from far away, which fits the song's theme. I think the way her voice is mixed was deliberate.

  • Amazing.

  • An appealing song, but my least fave of Hope's many great collabs, only 'cause the male singer, an average singer at best, is placed so high in the mix, while Hope's voice, one of best singing voices in the world, imo, is mixed so low, you can barely hear her... If you're lucky enough to have Hope on your music project, don't dampen her down, flaunt her!! I learned this week "angel's share" is a term referring to the alcohol lost to evaporation while spirits (e.g. scotch) age in wooden casks.

  • The more Hope collabs there are, the better! Such variety. You'd think she was a social gadfly, instead of a shy person, the way she does so many collabs with different bands. But the fact is, a lot of them she does in a solitary fashion. She'll be sent a backing track and will put lyrics & melody to them at home, without ever joining the band or producer in the studio, or even meeting them or speaking with them, necessarily!

  • I really love this neo country-folk music and Vetiver is one great band among others of that kind. Thank you for uploading!

  • beautiful.a perfect song.

  • @salmonbomb

    that made me laugh, dude!

But, i am a fan of hope, but not familiar with 'vetiver'.

  • it does have a grateful feel to it sara, good picking that up, it is subtle but there i hear it too

  • yeah, thought that too. She/This reminds me a lot of Emmylou Harris. They do that to her voice a lot...since she likes to collaborate with w323042834023 of different artists. lawl.
