Introduction to Metaphysics raises some questions about the nature of reality and how those questions have been dealt with by philosophers and by popular culture. The starting point for our investigations is in the six Meditations of René Descartes, a seventeenth century French philosopher. Following in the tradition of the Greek philosophers, his Meditations raise questions about the nature of reality by raising other questions about doubt, certainty and the foundations of knowledge. These academic questions, which are still alive today as the Unit will show, have inspired many authors and film makers, especially in the genre of science fiction, so we will be exploring the ways in which metaphysical questions are dealt with from a popular perspective.
