"All-female Funk-Rock pioneers return!"

Carol MacDonald's ISIS had already kicked everyone's butts for range, chops, and sexual shock. They followed it up by getting even tighter in the pocket. This title track was from the second album, produced by legendary New Orleans maestro Allan Toussaint. Gone are the mercurial epics, honed back to greasy funk in three minute doses. It's a surprising discipline that recalls his work with The Meters. Any true Funk fan owes it themself to explore this secret classic album!

The line-up on this was a ten-piece by now, expanding on the group who did the debut. Stella Bass is still prominent on bass and soulful vocals, with Carol sliding in her patented sassy grit and choppy rhythm guitar.

Carol says 73 women passed through ISIS in seven years. She encouraged their training and their next opportunities. The line-up seen in this video is another set from 1976, seen in candid shots from a gig at the Galaxy Night Club in Hamilton Parish, Bermuda:

Carol MacDonald: rhythm guitar, lead vocals
Faith Fusillo: lead guitar, vocals
Benita LaGattuta: bass
Annie LaGattuta: drums
Margo Lewis: keyboards, vocals
Ellen: trumpet

This video is dedicated to BENITA and ANNIE LAGATTUTA, whose personal photos enabled me to make it. Thanks again!

(Annie says, "Check out Carol's pants! They were her prized possession- painted jeans- sometimes she would hold the microphone "low" to let the pants sing!")

  • What is that sixties-looking picture from where Carol is all femmed out?

  • It's a Goldie & The Gingerbreads photo from around 1964. It came from the Rhino box set, "Girl Group Sounds". It seemed appropriate to get her lineage into this one!

  • Shout out to whomever put this video together...the recording is from approx 1975; the photos from approx 1978.

There was no video of the song at the time the album was recorded...35 YEARS AGO! The song comes from the group's second album ("Ain't No Backin' Up Now) produced by the infamous Alan Toussaint in his New Orleans studio. The photos were taken during a gig we did in Bermuda, approx 1979. Thanks again to whomever put this all together.

    -Faith Fusillo (1975-1980)

    Annie LaGattuta

  • @faithfu Hey!! I met you back in I think is was 1977 or 78, I was like 16, It was so amazing to meet all of you. I was a friend of Benita's at the time. This video was amazing!! ISIS was an awesome group. You should check out my bands on facebook donde aqui and fore dee, and zen again.

  • This is Shredmistess Rynata or Renate as I was known then. I played on this track. Whoa... long time ago. I was in ISIS in 1975 and a turbulent time it was indeed. Worlds collided. Much fun though,

  • I was in Isis, sax/flute was your Mom's name Stella. Would love to reconnect. Please let me know, Thanks, Edith

  • @faithfu

Hi Faith, This is Gigi daughter of Stella Bass CEO of UpDaBlock Music located in NJ and Atlanta GA. I had spoke with Ron a few months ago regarding some video footage of the group to get. Allot of people on the east coast is requesting to view ISIS on VH1 as well as have them featured on HBO as a documentary. I had spoke with the band members and they're willing to do it. Just waiting for Ron to come forward with some video footage of the band. This would be phenomenal to see.

  • I would like to see them perform as well since my mother was the bass player for ISIS. I may have to contact Ron Guitman who was their former manager to see if he has some video footage of them performing. These ladies were ahead of their time and gave the men a run for their money as well. But this group had made history as being female pioneer musicians in the music industry. VH1 needs to do a documentary on the group. Ron did you read this.... make this happen..or I will

  • wow how great to see and hear them all after all these years, i got them a gig in woodstock, the village hall wow so long ago, not a great turnout they were unknown- but hey they were so way ahead of their time, way way ahead, they could easily do t all now and smash it... love to all sky

  • Anyone have any videos of the band in 1975 "Ain't No Back'in Up Now" When I was one of the sax/flute players. Would love to see it!

  • It could've been their big break, shame it never happened. The title track is a grower

  • After hearing the samples of all three albums (plus a few tracks in their entirety) I had the debut down as a masterpiece. ANBUN is its equal.
