Former Cananore footballer of the 1910s and 1920s, and one of the best footballers ever to hail from Tasmania, certainly the best to have never played in the VFL/AFL, Horrie Gorringe was recently inducted into the Australian Football Hall Of Fame. He was said to have been stronger than Joel Selwood, had the acceleration of Chris Judd's, and his skills were said to match Gary Ablett's. In fact, he was described by Collingwood's prolific goalkicker of the 1920s and 1930s, Gordon Coventry, as "the perfect footballer". Dual Melbourne Brownlow Medallist Ivor Warne-Smith, and the legendary Roy Cazaly, also hailed him as the greatest rover ever. Gorringe was already inducted into the Tasmanian Sporting Hall Of Fame, and as an Icon in the Tasmanian Football Hall Of Fame. He was also selected as a forward pocket in the Tasmanian Team Of The Century, and so this latest induction into the AFL Hall Of Fame confirms his status as one of the game's greats.

In tribute to Gorringe's recent induction, here is a news story broadcast on TAS TV Evening News on the 18th July 1994, reflecting on his life and career after he passed away aged 99 the previous day.
