Diolkos: a glance over the Canal - 5nov2010

Notice how decrepit the banks of the Canal are! Well, the Greek Ministry of Culture has preferred to efface itself and kept insisting that the "salvation" of the monument was LINKED to the repair of the banks of the Canal! This SLY arrangement was used to cover-up decades of inactivity - practically the "assisted demolition" of the monument itself!
The western end of the monument was excavated between 1956 and 1960 or 1962 BUT the existence of its vestiges on the Peloponnese side of the Canal were known to both archaeologists and the Canal Company people since the 1930s or even earlier. Although the Greek Ministry of Culture has cultivated the impression that it had been aroused to the monument's severe deterioration in 1984, when the Canal asked for permission to build the nearby bridge and had been since waiting for the Canal to fulfill a TERM for dome kind of study about Diolkos asked on THAT occasion, it has become increasingly obvious that the Ministry was instead backing-up a series of mock studies by which the Canal Company was supposedly willing to build low protective walls in the whole Canal. In fact, the Ministry people were quick to withdraw their 1984 "term" some months later, and have since been "operating" (= doing nothing = ensuring the monument's destruction) on the (covered) "guideline" that the protection of the monument from the sea was NOT their business.
Forced to take some action by continuous reports to Justice Authorities TWELVE YEARS after their inactivity was first (?) reported to Justice, they commissioned - in the Fall of 2010 - a study for a wavebreaker to another Ministry, to FIT the DOGMA about the protection of Diolkos not being their business. They also try to extricate themselves from their responsiblities by pretending that the "technical" aspects of the works needed for Diolkos' protection were beyond their understanding.
