In my kung-fu competitions, whenever we found ourselves on the ground, possibly after leg sweeps or so, we generally would use what we call a "kip-up" to quickly get back to our feet! My kip-up isn't all that fluid and amazing, but I do go from on the ground to standing up! So it was correct!
O.o I just go with the fall and do a backwards roll. You don't take damage from hitting the ground and plus you get some distance from the opponent.
