GENESIS - The Serpent (Peter Gabriel & Anthony Phillips era)

This was the first song ever written by Genesis. Peter and Tony wrote it during their time at Charterhouse when they were only 14 years old. The song was called "She is Beautiful." Then they joined up with Mike Rutherford and Anthony Phillips to form Genesis and this song ended up evolving into "The Serpent." That is pretty cool that a couple 14 year olds could write something like this. They were destined to be who they are.

notice the riff at the beginning that you would hear later on in "Twilight Alehouse"

Unfortunately I discovered this album during a very painful time in my life, so most of these sounds have awful memories attached for me. I love The Serpent though, it's one of Genesis best.

Snake means nothing more to hiss a spell or curse with the mouth.
The tree is known by its fruit. Who was the bad tree? Which Angel?
Anointed cherub has been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold:, was perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
