Old public domain serials vs. Big Trouble in Little China. Starring John Wayne as Jack Burton, Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi as Lo Pan, with cameos appearances by Lon Chaney Jr., Herman Brix and Noah Beery, Jr.

Many of those may be available for streaming or download on archive.org. The background image for the opening and closing title cards is a slightly darkened detail from an etching titled "Dark Alley" by John Winkler, 1920. The creeky, attempted Chinese-sounding music from the start and end are taken from "Shadow of Chinatown". Most of the rest of the music and audio are taken from the actual Big Trouble in Little China (1986). I'd have prefered to use Thirties incidental music throughout the thing, but some of the best lines from the original BTILC had Eighties soundtrack music running through it, so I had to roll with it.

Don't miss these slightly less popular entries in the "Big Trouble" series from the Thirties and Forties:
Big Trouble in Little Italy
Big Trouble in the Casbah
A Little Trouble in the Big Top
Big Trouble in Chattanooga
Big Trouble in Little Atlantis

  • Nicely done.

And a subtle nod to Bucakroo Banzai to boot.

  • There is a connection. W.D. Richter who directed Buckaroo Banzai also wrote the screenplay for Big Trouble. (He did some major "script doctoring" to an existing script for Big Trouble. The original was set in Old West San Francisco with Jack as a cowboy! I should have used Duke's westerns for this.) There have been rumors that Big Trouble is meant as a sequel to Buckaroo, but Richter denies it. He might have incorporated some rough ideas from the Buckaroo sequel.

  • I like to think that Jack Burton, despite being overly macho, is the biggest geek and Blue Blaze Irregular out there.

  • I can picture Ol' Jack Burton meeting the Hong Kong Cavaliers by accident when they were playing some dusty roadhouse in the southwest. That would make a nice fanfic story.

  • That is awesome

  • I always saw John Wayne in a pre-make of Fantastic Four. As the Thing. It's clobering time, pilgrim!

  • nice vid !!!!!!!!!

  • Excellent work! Bravo!

  • Hahaha great stuff. What a film, well done!! Funny.

  • This is a great job.

You're smart to stick with the old audio too

    because Youtube's strongest copyright detection

is through audio not video. I've lost a few that way.

if I had the time to do stuff like this, i'd look at THINGS TO COME (1936)

No shortage of comedy material there---
