9/11 was like a sudden -- and violent -- death in the family. And, like such an unexpected and horrific death, there wasn't time to think. Those in New York had to take care of business and did so, surely, in a state of shock. People had to run from burning buildings (or worse), run for their lives, search for their friends and their co-workers and, of course, try to save the lives of thousands.

The next day, however, everything was different. People had had time to catch their breaths and fully feel the emotions and the horrors. The city, a mass of noise and a jumble of people the day before, was now eerily silent -- its silence speaking volumes.
