most likely it is the camshaft synchronizer. the sound would come from the left side of the engine. but it is hard to pin point because it echoes around and sounds like a pully.
Replace the tensioner they run probably around 60 bucks when it's making noise its worn out also replace your belt too I own a mobile auto repair sevice if you have any question feel free to ask me
Mine did the same thing but it wasn't internal...it was the belt tensioner which needs to be lubed...take a can of WD40 and get some behind the tensioner and inside of it to and get a 15mm wrench and work the tensioner back and forth a few times...the oil will work down inside where the spring is and I sprayed some belt dressing on the belt also...after awhile it stopped squeaking...key is to lube it and work it back and forth a few times.
OK...I stand corrected...It does sound more like the camshaft position synchronizer, since it seems to be coming from the left side of the engine...Since I have a Taurus with a Vulcan...I know now what to expect eventually...Thanx YouTube...
ive look all overe the web and find that the syncranizer is bad if sqweeking id heard on driver side but isthe sensor bad if both polls termanals have ten volts with no pulse 2001 taurus 3.0L vin code U ?
Does it make that sound just when warm or it doesnt matter ?

Drivers side noise, sometimes sounds like it's coming from rear valve cover, bell housing area. Awesome post, thanks.
