I have 4 cores and 12GB RAM installed but in the System Information I cannot set "Total After Effects memory usage" higher than 2,4GB. Why? Can you please help?

Okay so This is what i am currently running.
i7 2600k @ 4.5 GHz
Ati Radeon 5970 Black Edition (850 MHz OC) With Open CL Enabled
4 GB of ddr3 1333 mhz Ram (16 GB 1600 mhz is coming in the mail)
How much will the 16 GB Speed up my renders using this? Because right now 4 GB SUCKS.

@NSNewcomeR You can use 4 cores for SD only. HD video you are likely to see potentially decreased performance if you turn on multiprocessing. You MIGHT be able to pull off 3 cores HD or 2 cores for sure. Always remember your system needs RAM also. So as far as AE is concerned, you don't have 8GB RAM. More like 6GB for AE and 2 for OS. 6GB is just enough for 3 cores.

@CarlyleSpeaks 8 GB Ram 4 Cores.

@XxAncientxXX Oh yeah..cheap RAM is a factor too. Look at RAM speed and BUS speed!

@rehdoggvideos You may have an older machine with older drivers. My 4GB ram i3 laptop DESTROYS my 8GB QUAD core desktop for playing HD MP4s with media player. Do you have low Video RAM?

@xDanZorz Thanks for adding to the view count! :)

@iiTzDaryl Probably not

@NSNewcomeR How many cores? How much RAM?
I'm running an i7 970 6 core, with 18 GB RAM, but after effects RAM previews are so slow! If I try to increase the amount of RAM in the setting I start getting errors such as "after effects needs more than two frame for a ram preview" or it will only preview a few frames. I'd love to know what settings I should be using when compositing with HD footage.

@catalytic63 First off, I am really NOT impressed with Adobe stability. I don't think they put enough pride in their products. That being said, perhaps you are running into another "Adobe Surprise"? Otherwise, if windows, then what is your performance score? Also, do you have fast drives? Plenty of free space? Norton installed? Lots of applications in the background? Low video RAM? Spyware?
