Played at the 2006 Mary Ward Music Festival as part of the showcase for the MIDI course.
I used a combination of the programs Sibelius, Cubase SX and Protools. The key was inspired by Liszts La Campanella although the composition ended up sounding like a baroque-era piece (ironic since I have a distaste for baroque). Looking back I guess I experimented with a lot of counterpoint, along with some dissonant and atonal themes.
When I listen to this piece I visualize flying into the clouds, and then finding myself in a haze of lightning, darkness and plenty of confusion. At the conclusion of the piece, I struggle but escape the cloud and notice the sun shining in the horizon.
Dialogue:
Gassi : Im with Josh Balon, composer grade 12 - Josh tell us about your piece
Josh: Its for woodwind quintet, its called Camponata Quintet. Its for 2 flutes, 2 clarinets and 1 bass clarinet
Gassi: And this was an original piece by you, for piano that was transcribed for woodwinds
Josh: It was actually just for piano, a sonata
Gassi: Tell us, as a composer, what have you learned
Josh: I have learned how to create melodies, shape harmonies, use certain instruments at the right time, I learned a lot!
