Days after 16 Senate Democrats signed a letter stating that they "cannot, in good conscience, vote for a final budget that includes any cuts to education" Senate Democrats voted yes to cutting $1.4 billion statewide which is $500 million from New York City schools. Mayor Bloomberg said this could result in 8,500 teacher layoffs. Cutting our schools will leave our schoolchildren with larger class sizes, fewer arts, music, and language classes, an elimination of after-school and tutoring programs, and fewer opportunities to learn. Earlier this week, parents, students and community members protested outside of Senator Espadas and Senator Addabbos office demanding an answer to their choice to vote for the largest education cuts in the history of New York State instead of asking Wall Street to pays its fair share.
