An accident claimed the life of a Denton High School graduate this week in Peru.

Librada "Lilly" Cantu
Librada "Lilly" Cantu, who was serving with Catholic Mission in Peru, fell from the third-story roof of San Francisco de Asís, a shelter in the Chaclacayo district, Peruvian media outlets reported. She was 20.

It was unclear when the accident occurred.

School district officials on Friday said that upon graduating from Denton High School in 2009, Cantu postponed college to work with the mission in Peru.

School officials remembered Cantu as a compassionate young woman who loved life.

Doretha Hudspeth, who was Cantu's counselor when she was a student at Rivera Elementary School and Denton High, said that she would light up a room when she entered it and was someone people noticed.

She said Cantu was a good student, a high school Student Council member and pursued her certified nursing assistant certification through a health science tech class.

She said Cantu also loved working with children at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where she was a member.

"She just enjoyed helping other people," Hudspeth said. "When she [Cantu] talked about it, her face just lit up."

She said that she will remember Cantu as someone who was never without a smile.

"She loved life and she loved her family," Hudspeth said. "I just think a lot of people will miss her, and my heart just goes out to the family."
