The L Word Received a Ribbon of Hope Recognition Award for breast cancer story

10th Annual Ribbon of Hope Celebration November 29, 2006; Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre in North Hollywood ; Los Angeles, CA, USA.
For the first time in its history, the Ribbon of Hope presented an award to THE L WORD outside of the area of HIV/AIDS awareness. The Ribbon of Hope presented a Special Award for Breast Cancer Awareness to The L Word for its extraordinary breast cancer storyline and related awareness campaign. Present for award are: Ilene Chaiken Erin Daniels Leisha Hailey Kate Moennig Laurel Holloman Marlee Matlin.

"Showtime's "The L Word" was selected to receive Ribbon of Hope's first honor outside the area of HIV and AIDS for its storyline on breast cancer during its third season. It followed the wrenching journey of Dana Fairbanks (Erin Daniels) from the discovery of a lump to her death from an opportunistic infection contrracted when chemotherapy weakens her immune system. "Lesbians have been virtually unrepresented in the popular culture," said Ilene Chaiken, the series' creator and executive producer. "It's a privledge to be taking part in television that makes a difference." "
