This is a track from the most criminally underplayed Castlevania game, "Castlevania 2: Belmont's Revenge" for the original GameBoy. There were only three Castlevania games made for ol' gray, but this one stands at the top of the pile, perhaps at the top for ALL handhelds, depending on how you like your C-Vania. The level progression is borrowed from MegaMan, so you get to pick from four elemental castles (plant, earth, air, and crystal). Then you get to fight through the actual Castlevania in three more, regularly progressing levels. The entire soundtrack ranks among the best for Castlevania, and is certainly the best on the original Gameboy. Konami really knew how to handle the sound chip for any game system, even the particularly crappy GB audio.

In particular, this track is from the first Dr. Wil... er, Castlevania level, and it also happens to be my favorite out of the whole soundtrack. It just elicts so much emotion, you can't help but wish there were some kind of rock/metal cover for it. If one listens to the insturments they use, and how they use them, all the right pieces are there. It only need some talented musicians with the drive to do it; absoluetly nothing needs to be changed about the composition, except maybe adding an extra bridge and throwing in a solo for good measure.

  • did you add reverb or something?

  • The reverb was added by konami themselves, presumably, as this and all the belmont's revenge tracks come from a CD release of this, Super Castlevania IV, and Castlevania Adventure. Why they felt in necessary to add it is beyond me, but it actually doesn't ruin the soundtrack too much, and in my opinion, enhances it a bit in some ways. Castlevania Bloodlines, on the other hand, has an AWFUL reverb added to it, and it pretty much makes the tracks unlistenable.
