Not to nitpick, but I"m a Rich Mullins fan before a Phil Stacey fan, & you imply that Phil is the first, & he's not. Rich did record this: on a boombox, 10 days before he died, in a little by-the-road church, he recorded all the songs he meant for a new concept album. After his death a 2-disc set was released w/his rough demos & his friends covering the songs. This one was recorded by Rick Elias. Sorry Phil fans, but I'm afraid this version is too upbeat for me, I prefer both original covers.

It's an okay version I guess. Rich Mullins did record it by the way. He recorded it on the WOW 1999 CD as an extra song attached to Nichole Nordeman's To Know you. I still think Rich sang it best.

My opinion is that this is a good version if you want to really hear all the lyrics. Rich was such a great lyricist but it's hard to understand it all in his rough version. BUT, I think Rich did a better job conveying the pain that would lead someone to sing/pray these words.

Awesome! I like this version even better than the one that was covered for the Jesus Record - this sounds like I think Rich would have made it sound. Great job!

Hard to believe it has been longer than that since Rich went Home. This is ok, but agree - the boombox version is the best. We love you brother, thanks for pointing the Way Home!

@fillysunray I would encourage you to listen to both.:-). They are both great guys and talented musicians. Rich is probably the one who influenced Phil the most, and he happened to have lived in the same places Phil himself did, Ohio and Kansas.

This is a pretty good cover but the Rich Mullins version, recorded on that cheap boombox a few days before he died, is probably one of the most powerful recordings ever made. 12 years since it was released and it still chokes me up.

I don't listen to either Rich Mullins or Phil Staacey very much, and either way, I don't care which is better. But this song is amazing. The lyrics and meaning are really heartfelt

Well, you are certainly entitled to your opinion.:-). I cannot argue about the previous recordings as I have never heard them. If you have any links to Rich's original covers, or can post a video response, I would love to hear them. Phil chose to do the song with a country flavor, if you will, because of his country roots. And since I have come to love Phil before knowing more about Rich, whom I do admire as a musician, Phil remains number one with me.
