His appearance represents how christine thinks of him, when she decideds to rip off his mask and choose Raul she sees the phantom for what he really is. That's my interpretation anyway.

It seem that Christine didn't know of the phantom's feelings for her until the end of the song. She regreted having to do what she did when she understood that the Phantom did all that for her love. it's so sad!
