you can also have shadowmere the fighting horse, and summon spectral assasin (brotherhood guild). the assasin stays with you for like 23000+ hrs soo hes basically a follower. he aslo doesnt fill the conjuring slot of your army soo +2. technicaly you can have 8!!!!! (Thumb this up)

if you go to rorikstead (i think) you can also get an unkillable dog from a daedric prince that follows you forever.

i guess there is no way to do it if you have completed the main quest am i right?

interesting, I have an interesting glitch where some hired thugs allied themselves with me and now they follow me around wherever I go XD, they actually walk from city to city though so I sometimes have to wait for them to travel on foot if I warp lol.

@hoomdiyada also if you haven't started companions, i suggest getting farkas, and then do daedras best friend to get barbas. Do the Stormcloak/Imperial quests so you can get Ralof/Hadvar. When you get far through the thieves Guild you can get Brynjolf and that other chick :D so thats another 5 :D hope everyone else sees this.

Couldn't you give them summon books and staves that cast summon as well in theory?

@wutwutindawutwut Unfortunately you cannot give Delphine or Esbern any gear.
