My receiver starts showing artifacts on the screen and the image begins to flicker after a while. It was repaired twice under warranty. HDMI board was replaced both times. HDMI board indeed failed twice (receiver did not show any picture), but in my opinion it failed because it was overheating. Replacing it does not solve the bigger issue. As it was still not operating as it should, I had the receiver in for repairs for the third time. I just got it back, supposedly nothing is wrong with it. I made this video that shows that a problem definately exists, although the HDMI board is (for now) still working.

According to other owners it should not overheat, given enough room, which it has. Speakers and inputs are also not a problem, since I am able to reproduce the fault by various inputs and if I bypass the receiver, everything works.

Additionally if I mount a fan over the top of the receiver so that it cools it, everything is fine, but I should be able to use it without any modification or noise while watching a movie, the same "privilige" that is available to other owners.

UPDATE:
I sent this video with my receiver to Onkyo service and asked for an exchange since this was the third time they failed to repair it. It was exchanged for the next generation TX-SR607 model which works as it should.

I don't recommend going the Onkyo way, the service is bad and I'm not overly satisfied with the performance. The sound is great, but HDMI capabilities are very poor. From source switching to upscaling, bad.

I would probably buy a Pioneer VSX-1019AH-S in this price range if buying again.

  • I get alot of these cheap due to this problem amd fix them. It's SMD capacitors on the HDMI board, even when replaced new they are known to be defective from factory as the capacitors Onkyo used are junk. Also the Powersupplys has known issue with capacitors, I order better brand caps like Pansonics FM capacitors where low ESR is needed and nichicon capacitors for everything else and receiver works like new, with no issues

And it's not really a overheating problem, it's a power issue.

  • @RetroPCDOS Thanks for the insight. One would think Onkyo would do something about it. It wasn't cheap for them to replace three HDMI boards under warranty with no effect.

  • Odd suggestion: You may want to look at the data of the media files themselves to see if the circuit logic is redirected. I'm exploring signal processing issues now. If you're running from files whose sources are questionable then you might be frying the board and not know it. Reputable sources for both equipment and media are the best choices. It helps to stay within your country's market when purchasing, i.e., things that are licensed by your country for distribution.

  • @Cynthia5314 Interesting, but for me the problem existed regardless of source. I've had the receiver exchanged through warranty for a TX-SR607 and it works fine with all my sources. The EU has a single market and the same Onkyo receivers are also sold here.

I am using XboX 360 with HDMI, a blue-ray equipped HTPC with an AMD 4670 graphics card and Auzentech X-Plosion 7.1 sound card. I also use high quality HDMI cables. One could hardly call the equipment anything else than reputable :).

  • I have the TX-SR606 and its HDMI board has failed the same way. The system is out of warranty and Onkyo will replace the board for $185. That is a OEM defect and they should fix it at no cost to the consumer. So far, they are totally unresponsive. Maybe a class action suit will get their attention.

  • @rickwolferickwolfe I hope you get it fixed. They replaced my HDMI board three times under warranty with no success.

  • Pioneer #1 for RELIABILITY . FCK DENON ONKYO AND YAMAHA, dont even start with sony

  • Update conclusion THX receivers are better because they go thru physical tests

  • @TheDr604 what do i doooo??

  • i just bought a 500 Dollar Onkyo HT RC 360 av reciever and i had the same problem when i plug my PC into it the picture flickers and gets scattered green pixels! luckily it happened on the 2nd day i bought it, i exchanged it at Visions. Problem is after 2 weeks with my SECOND New onkyo ht rc 360 reciever the picture flickering came back with scattered pixels. This is BS! I keep this reciever in an open area always below cold room temp. Im stuck now with no more return policy. OMG......

  • @crapsite Yup. I wont go Onkyo again. There call center in NJ was worthless. told me to buy another brand and return this one.

I'm going to keep returning it to the repair center, I hope to get this problem solved.

  • A class action suit is probably the answer as they are unresponsive. My unit hasn't worked since I took it out of the box and they will not replace it because they were not notified within 30 days. It gets so hot you can't hold your hand on it for more than a second and the sound cuts on and off after an hour of operation. Was already sent for repair and came back saying it was "fixed" and still operates the same way. A real piece of junk!

  • guys, just replace the 5 faulty caps on the hdmi board, lots of info on the net how to do this. Costs £3 for the parts and can be fixed in less than an hour.

  • This is a bit late, but I'm sure by now you've seen all the AV forums where everyone has these kind of problems with the TX-SR606 (and many other Onkyo models). Given enough room, it will still overheat and fail because it is so poorly designed. There's a temporary fix that you can try (replacing 4 capacitors and adding an extra 4 - it worked for me!), but you need to add additional cooling to the unit. Onkyo should really have recalled these terrible products, I'll never buy their stuff again.
