PIZZICA SALENTINA - GIGI TOMA INTERVIEW
'Pizzica encourages you to liberate and energise yourself,' explains Gigi Toma, founder and lead singer of the Salentine band Alla Bua (Greek for 'alternative remedy'), after giving me an account of the birth of Dionysus more vivid than the one found in the Bacchae. Alla Bua, one of the most popular groups in the region, perform regularly to audiences of twenty or thirty thousand. 'For us, every night is the Notte della Taranta. People feel good because they're liberated from daily life. The more charge, the more energy there is, the more liberated you are. The music has to get faster and faster, especially live, so you exhaust yourself. If that doesn't happen then the trance won't come. It's music that can heal people. It unites generations and peoples, but above all, it's liberation from the ills of our time.' Just as it always has been. One might argue that pizzica, once the only known cure for the bite of the taranta, and subsequently the depression and mental illness that continued to be attributed to it, performs a similar function today, liberating the listener from modern ills, albeit in the context of an evening of entertainment

NOTTE DELLA TARANTA 2008 in GRECIA SALENTINA (Salentinian Greece) Is a Griko-speaking area in the peninsula of Salento in southern Italy, near the town of Lecce. It consists of nine towns and belongs to province of Lecce and the administrative area of Apulia (Puglia). Nine towns make part of it: Calimera, Martano, Castrignano dei Greci, Corigliano d'Otranto, Melpignano, Soleto, Sternatia, Zollino and Martignano. In addition to these, there are two more towns represented in the Union of the Towns of Grecìa Salentina (Unione dei Comuni della Grecìa Salentina), Carpignano Salentino and Cutrofiano, though the inhabitants of these two towns have not spoken the Greek dialect called griko in two centuries
