Making Ven Pongal for two people

Take two measures of Moong Dall and two measures of Rice in a vessel and wash them thoroughly in water .. drain out the water.

Next take about 5 or 6 teaspoons of pure ghee heat it in a kadai, and fry about 2 table spoons of pepper corns and half teaspoon

of jeera..
about some karepak ( curry leaves ) then add the washed rice+dal mix and fry till the water is dried ...

Transfer the fried rice+dall mixture into a suitable vessel, add water sufficient for the rice ( four volumes for two volumes of rice )

and cook for about 5 minutes in a pressure cooker..

Remove from the cooker and after sufficiently cooled add grated coconut - dry or wet - a little salt (also fried cashew nuts

optionally ) mix thoroughly and serve .. either as it is or with some pudina chutney ..
EAT !

  • Sir, Could u tell me should the salt be added only at the end? not before?

  • there is no hard and fast rule in this recipe that you should add the salt in the end only .. you could add it in while cooking in the pressure cooker also, but it is my general practise ( in this case ) to add it only in the end.. :-)

  • Thank you sir! Looks really yummy..... I will try it out. But, I will miss adding the fresh coconut :(

  • yes, i agree that the best would be to put fresh coconut, but sometimes, and i think you will agree, we have to accept something less than the best in exchange for some convenience, a trade off .. all the best cheers :-)

  • i really enjoyed this video. i have a pressure cooker and am wanting to learn more about indian cooking. what is pudina chutney?

also - what are "2 measure" of dal and rice? is that like 2 US "cups" ?

    thank you.

  • thanks for viewing and posting your comments.. i really appreciate them, yes having a pressure cooker makes cooking much easier, especially indian recipes.. pudina chutney is mint chutney, and i remember i had got the best mint leaves while i was in the usa for a visit sometime ago .. it is a dip used with many dishes, idli, vada, dosa etc. almost any dish ( i've posted a video on that ) ..and yes.. 2 measures is any cup you would use to measure your volumes, and like two cups,, enjoy :)

  • thanks so much for your recipe, i made ven pongal the first time based on your recipe. However, it was very heavy, so the second time i made it, i did half measure of dal to rice and it was very light

  • thanks! you make a lot of bachelors happy!

  • Your videos are so sweet! I think it is a great initiative.

  • thanks for this... I always did the boil the rice and dal first and then did kind of a tadka later... One thing I guess all the viewers would appreciate is the quality of the audio... At times, it is not that audibile and/or scrambled.... Please keep up the good work.... :)

  • Thank you :),

I saw your mysore pak recipe ....... can't wait to try it in the weekend..... need to run to grocery store after office.

Your videos make me feel nostalgic. Keep up the great work. Looking forward for more videos.
