The most powerful October storm in nearly 50 years is pounding Lake Tahoe and the Central Sierra today (Oct. 13). We haven't had a storm this dynamic during the month of October since the 1962 Columbus Day storm which killed scores of people and toppled thousands of trees from California to Washington State. Yesterday the National Weather Service office in Reno called me for information of what happened during the 1962 event so they could warn people what might happen this time. I have about 150 years worth of records and newspaper accounts of the biggest storms that ever hit the Sierra. The NWS only has modern data so once in a while they need some help researching past weather events. Weather history does repeat itself. The 1962 storm delayed the baseball World Series between the San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees.
