Jack Lemmon was the "drummer" here, I believe, anyway...long live the Nairobi Trio!

This wasn't racist at all. This was a play on a wind up toy that was of a monkey playing a drum. It was a well known toy at the time. The similarity to the toy is what makes this funny.

Maybe someone can explain this to me but I don't exactly get what's so funny. Saw my dad laughing at this but I can't understand why. Anyone care to explain and not get so offended just because I don't really find it funny?

That was funny! I liked when the middle monkey turned to the other one as if to say, "What the heck are you hitting me for??" lol!

This routine is not racist, and it isn't meant to be, either. Folks who think that don't get that it was a simpler time, and sometimes, a monkey is just a monkey, and there's no hidden negative meaning behind it. Personally, I think it's very funny and showed a good deal of imagination for its time. Ernie Kovacs was a lot more than this skit, and anyone interested in TV or comedy should give the man a look.

@mrgraphics you have it right on the head. jscottj55, if you drew the conclusion that the guys in gorilla suits were meant to imply that African people are monkeys, you need to take a better look at yourself. You are the one who should be embarrassed. Check out "Nairobi Trio" in Wikipedia.
I am fortunate enough to have been born early enough (1942) to have seen Ernie on live TV (and Sid Ceaser, Howdy Doody, Romper Room, etc.). What a blow to TV and comedy in general that he died so young.
