We accompany Khmer author Teeda Butt (who wrote one of the first Khmer Rouge survivor narratives, "To Destroy You Is No Loss," http://www.amazon.com/Destroy-You-No-Loss-Cambodian/dp/0963220519 ) on one of her trips back to Phnom Penh, as she reminisces about her childhood and the changes she's seen in the city over 33 years.

  • From 1970's there are 2,000,000 people in Phnom Penh not 300,000. man she doesn't about population in Phnom Penh back then.

  • Not exactly. She's right about the general population of Phnom Penh during that time. The 2 million figure you mention was only true at the tail end of the civil war (late 1974-early 1975), when the population swelled with refugees prior to the victory of the Khmer Rouge.

  • I was wondering, can the guy narrating the video also speak Cantonese?

  • haha...nope. I did study Cantonese for a few months about 17 years ago, but I can't speak it today. I'd like to learn someday, though.

  • hehe...mr. preahko has his hair straighten like all the boys in cambodia. it looks good. :D

  • haha, thanks...not a regular thing, I had it done special for that day!

  • Man, you have a really good Khmer accent too.

If I closed my eyes, I wouldn't be able to hear the difference.

  • Is there any more new episode coming up or that's it?

  • maybe she is right. back then, there were less Vietnamese pple. Now, they're everywhere in Phnom Penh.

  • I'm also curious as to how come you decided to learn Khmer? Not much demand for Khmer anything.

  • Oh, ok. I just thought you were an actor in one of the Hong Kong movie. You look and sound almost like him.

  • Preahko, u are my new hero man. I love how u talk in Khmer. Keep up the good work. I love your show.

  • yeah, but still in 1970 the population is almost 1 million.
