Special thanks to Matt Ottinger, who gave me this to begin with...This is a collection of clips from Bill Cullen's career that CBS News sent to their local affiliates who wished to do their own packages on Bill's death. Included are clips of the ABC version of "The Price is Right," an "I've Got a Secret" anniversary special, "Three on a Match," and the unaired "Hot Potato" pilot

  • Was this Hot Potato pilot shot after Child's Play ended?

  • @tpir1972 Yes, December 1, 1983.

  • That wasn't the pilot to Hot Potato, it was the premiere episode. I appeared on the pilot episode, which was hosted by Jack Barry.

  • "Hot Potato" actually taped multiple pilots, which was common in the 70s & 80s. I know for sure that the clip here is from a different pilot, and TV Guide did an article saying that they did another "Hot Potato" pilot with an unidentified younger, hipper guy who had never hosted a game show before, and NBC was unimpressed by him.

This is the first I've ever heard of Jack hosting a pilot for it, though. How did you get involved for it? Share whatever you can remember, and thanks for sharing!

  • Bill Cullan was very entertaining - he had a good but dry sense of humor. One of the best hosts during his time.

  • Bill Cullen was a great game show host, but it seemed like quite a few of his game shows didn't last vary long. No disrespect meant!

  • @vegaslover777 maybe of all time, the "Pride of Pittsburgh"

  • It was a well-hidden fact that Cullen was disabled by childhood polio. This is why you never saw him walking more than a step and rarely standing.

Many actors didn't know this. Mel Brooks once told of seeing Cullen walking with his unusual, splayed-legged gait, and thinking Cullen was making a joke, Brooks started mocking him.

When Brooks learned it wasn't a joke, he was devastated with embarrassment. He said that Cullen was a prince about the whole affair.

  • @tpir1972 They're members of a religious organization named after St. Francis of Assisi.

  • What the heck are Franciscians?

  • @AdamNedeff Also the theme song is different here in the opening.

  • @AdamNedeff The premiere had Moms to Be and Teachers (I think they are the same ones seen here).

  • @PatrioticPirate that was from the pilot.

  • Wow, that was cool. I liked the music Hot Potato theme that went to air, way better than that pilot. Glad they kept the smokin' sign.
