In his questions at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Committee nomination hearing for Robert Ford to be U.S. Ambassador to Syria, Senator Dick Lugar asked what circumstances have occurred that the presence of a U.S. Ambassador would improve progress and relations with Syria, given that we have not had an ambassador since 2005. Senator Lugar also encouraged the nominee to keep the Committee apprised of any changes that might be helpful regarding U.S. sanctions in order to improve relations with the young population and the business community in Syria. Finally, Senator Lugar expressed concern about Syrias nuclear program.
