It's off the album Uncommon Bonds.

Hope ya like it!

--Lyrics--

When I was a lad on the Emerald Isle
I heard many stories, both lovely & wild
About the great dragons and monsters that be
That swallow the ships when they sail on the sea
Oh, I was an artist with canvas & paints
I sailed with St. Brendan & his jolly saints
We told a good people goodbye for awhile

[Chorus]
We sailed for St. Brendan's fair isle
Fair isle
We sailed for St. Brendan's fair isle

We been on the ocean for 94 days
We came to a spot where the sea was ablaze
Those demons from Hades were dancin' with glee -
and burning the sailors alive on the sea
Then St. Brendan walked on the blistering waves
He threw all the demons right back to their caves
And all of the saints wore a heavenly smile

[Chorus]

One night while the brethren were lying asleep
A great dragon came up from under the deep
He thundered & lightened and made a great din;
He awakened St. Brendan & all of his men
The dragon came on with his mouth open wide
We threw in a cross and the great dragon died
We skinned 'im and cooked 'im and feasted awhile

[Chorus]

At last we came onto that beautiful land
We all went ashore & we walked on the sand
We took our longbows and we killed us a bool(Bull)
We roasted it up, and had hot barbeque
And after awhile we were singin' this song
We noticed the isle was movin' along
We ate and we drank and we rowed in high style

[Chorus]

Now Brendan said, "Boys, this is much to my wish -
we ride on the back of the world's biggest fish.
Hold fast to the rope that is pullin' the ship -
we'll need it some day if this fish takes a dip."

We sailed every ocean
We sailed every sea
We sailed every spot that a sailor could be
In 44 days we sailed 10 million miles

[Chorus]

[Chorus]

  • this song was written by Jimmy Driftwood...i wish people would learn to remember to give credit to the source of music.

  • That sounded so very condescending.

  • This sounds nice, but I personally think the best vesion of this song is the one sung by Danny Doyle.

  • Y'all, Danny Doyle also recorded this song, on the album "Twenty Years A-Growing." Check it out! IMHO, it's even better than this version, although this version rocks, too. One of the all-time GREAT folk songs. Jimmy Driftwood must have been a musical genius. :)

  • I just adore that song.....WOW! I find it sooo up-lifting....and Mick and Eugene did a WONDERFUL job on it. Thank you BarbaricGoose for posting it!!

  • Thank you this, I haven't heard this in 12 years... and I still remember every word!!!!

  • Like it - I LOVE this song! Many thanks for posting!

  • Ahha! So I was correct originally.

  • @hollywoodb1 the lyrics are actually "we took our longbows and killed us a bool (bull). I've heard Mick and Eugene do this in person a few times. Great performers and good friends

  • Hmm... I take issue with your lyrics... common mistake, but it is "We took our longbows and we killed a zebu" in the 4th section of the lyrics. if you don't know what a zebu is, go look 'em up. Great song though, I've been trying to find it everywhere lol.
