Jones in FHTE shows how one man takes matters in his own hands to rid the Army of a sadist. The initiative is good but find some sound regulations instead of a knife. Jones' later book/movie "Thin Red Line" shows how the Japanese had superior field craft and how it caused needless casualties until draftee professionals had to stand up and take-charge at the cost of post-war career prospects to overcome the WW1 frontal assault mentalities of lifer bureaucrats in order to win WW2; this isn't happening today because nearly EVERYONE is a "volunteer" lifer junior bureaucrat.

However, a COMPETENT U.S. military would have been dispersed, camouflaged and weapons loaded on December 7; scout seaplane patrols

would have detected the Jap carriers and at least sunk some along with half their attacking planes by at least an on-duty air defense force on land. The national outrage would still have been there to finish the war, but we wouldn't have had our asses kicked because we were goofing off in vacationland. 3, 000 men didn't need to die that day due to FHTE crap.

The main reason why the US has been involved in constant military disasters since 1945 is mainly due to its staff officers. Staff officers are bureaucrats who have no practical experience in the field. These men obtain military objectives with grossly overwhelming force against an inferior enemy and have an obsession with equipment and organisation.
