Textile workers demanding higher wages clashed with police in Bangladesh on Monday (August 2) in a fourth day of protest, although their leaders at an overnight meeting had agreed to the new pay structure announced last week.At least 70 people including police were injured in violence at Ashulia, Savar and Narayanganj, around the
capital Dhaka, witnesses said.Police used teargas, batons and rubber bullets to disperse the stick-wielding and brick-throwing protesters
who barricaded roads and attacked vehicles, they said. Around 300 people were injured and dozens detained in similar unrest over the past three days, police said. On Thursday (July 29), the government nearly doubled the minimum wage for millions of workers in the key export
garment industry to 3,000 taka (USD 43) from 1,662 taka, but it fell far short of labour union demands of 5,000 taka. But representatives from 42 labour unions agreed to accept the new wages at a meeting with ministers, lawmakers, garment factory owners and chamber leaders late
on Sunday (August 1). Labour Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said the government would take stern action to prevent unrest in the
garment sector. Readymade garments are Bangladesh's biggest export,
accounting for more than 80 percent of the impoverished
country's annual export earnings of The garment sector, with around 4,500 factories, employs 3.5 million workers, with many toiling in dangerous conditions.

  • Take a good look at this, America. ?There are some elements in our govt. who want third world working and living conditions for everyone who isn't a billionaire in the USA.

  • All they want is a liveable wage... they currently receive the lowest levelof industry salary anywhere in the world. how long will this exploitation continue. Even the recent increases fall way short.. they want to break away from poverty but are beig kept where they are by a greedy few. Even in the Mid East dubai, saudi etc.. its the B'deshis who receive lowest pay for hard & dangerous work.. these are people damn it...

  • THey should just start shooting the pigs
